Making Your Thumbnail and Gallery

Two kinds of picture sell your Listing. The Thumbnail is the one picture that stands for it on product cards and in search results. The Gallery is the photos and videos a Buyer swipes through on its page.

You add both on the Listing form: Thumbnail in its own box, Gallery in the wide box under the files. See Listing a File.

Thumbnail

  • One picture. JPG works best.
  • It is shown whole, never cropped, like a cover on a shelf. A portrait cover page and a square picture both work.
  • Make it readable small. Most Buyers see it at card size on a phone, so use a clear title in big letters and little else.
  • A Listing with no Gallery shows its Thumbnail on its own page too.
  • Up to 10 photos or videos.
  • The first one is what Buyers see first. Use the arrows under each one to change the order.
  • Each is shown square. A photo that isn't square is shown whole, with space around it.

Photos

  • Make them square, at least 1600 by 1600 pixels. Bigger is fine: we shrink every photo to 1600 pixels on its longest side before it uploads. A smaller photo is left as it is and can look soft.
  • JPG works best. Each photo can be up to 10 MB.
  • A photo straight from your phone is fine. It just takes longer to send.
  • Most phone photo apps can crop to a square: look for Crop, then Square.

Videos

  • MP4, WebM or MOV, under 5 MB. That is about 20 to 40 seconds at 720p.
  • Videos play on their own, muted, on your Listing's page. Keep them short, and make sense without sound.

What to show for a file

Show what your file looks like without giving it away. A good Gallery for a file is:

  1. The cover.
  2. The contents page, so Buyers see everything inside.
  3. Two or three sample pages.

On the sample pages, crop or blur anything a Buyer could use without paying, like answer keys or whole worked solutions.

The Gallery is pictures on your Listing's page. The Preview is a sample file a Buyer can open and save before paying. A Listing can have both, and both should stay a sample. See Preview file.
